2007 Mazda CX-7 - 2007 New Cars - Automobile Magazine
The attractive CX-7 is set to hit the US soon. See it first in our New Cars section.

More stylish and refined than the all-but-forgotten Tribute SUV, the CX-7 crossover will be an attractive choice for small families (it seats only five) thanks to available all-wheel drive, six standard air bags, and standard stability control. But with no U.S.-market replacement for the MPV minivan in the works and limited passenger capacity in the CX-7 and Tribute SUVs, the most capacious people hauler in the company's lineup will be the economically and ecologically friendly Mazda 5 minivan, which has six seats. Market analysts might call this strategy crazy, but we say Mazda deserves kudos for resisting the urge to offer a vehicle in every market niche.

Why Michael Schumacher Could Win The 2011 World Championship

Michael Schumacher’s 2010 comeback was somewhat abortive.  The results, the driving standard and the overtakes were well below par for the former champion.  He even let his team mate beat him for the first time in his career.  So why can Schumacher, the fallen Ferrari hero, win the world championship for an 8th time? It’s [...]

2007 Porsche 911 997 GT3

2007 Porsche 911 997 GT3
2007 Porsche 911 997 GT3 - Automobile Magazine
911 fever has broken out in Geneva-Both the new Turbo and new GT3 models are at the Swiss show. The GT3 is the most powerful non-turbo 911 in history, with 415 all-natural ponies, good enough for a 0-60 mph time of 4.1 seconds.

When a small, independent automaker like Porsche has two world-premieres at one auto show, it's big news. It's even bigger news when the two cars are the downright nutty 480-hp 911 Turbo and this model, the 911 GT3. With 415 horsepower, the GT3 is the most powerful non-turbo 911 road car in Porsche's history. The car starts with the same high-revving 3.6-liter flat-six as the last GT3, which was derived from the 996-series 911. For the 997-based GT3, Porsche adds a larger throttle valve (82 millimeters in diameter, up from 76 millimeters), new cylinder heads, and a reconfigured exhaust system. Changes have also been made to the car's six-speed transmission, including shorter ratios for the top five gears and a shifter with even shorter throws. All of these engine and transmission modifications, Porsche claims, results in a 0-to-60-mph time of 4.1 seconds, a 0-to-100-mph time of 8.7 seconds, and a top speed of 193 mph.

2007 Porsche 911 GT3 RS -New and Future Cars, Trucks, and SUVs - Automobile Magazine
The hardcore 2008 Porsche 911 GT3 RS is finally coming to the US! Celebrate with us here.

The GT3 RS is a Porsche 911 for those with no fear. We didn't get the 996-series GT3 RS, but Yankee speed freaks soon will be able to flog the 997-series follow-up. The RS is lighter than the already svelte GT3 thanks to the use of carbon fiber for the car's hood panel and its adjustable rear wing. Wider rear fenders like those from the 911 Carrera 4 cover the RS's increased rear track. Sharing its 415-hp flat six and six-speed manual gearbox with the regular GT3, the RS will be offered with black or silver paint as standard, but buyers can pay extra to have their cars sprayed in funky, 1970s-style shades of orange or green. The 911 GT3 RS hits the track in early 2007.

2007 Lincoln Navigator
2007 Lincoln Navigator and Navigator L - 2007 New Cars - Automobile Magazine
The new version of Lincoln's popular Navigator is as big and gaudy as ever before. Check it out in our New Cars section.

The 2007 Lincoln Navigator joins the all-new Lincoln MKX crossover and the renamed MKZ sedan (known for 2006 as the Zephyr), but it eschews the alphanumeric and keeps its real name. A fussy set of grilles clumsily recalls Continentals and Marks of the 1960s, but the look doesn't work here. Even if you don't find the effect elegant, you certainly can't miss it, and that might be more important anyhow. Driving home the "more is more" theme are tons of chrome, a "powerdome" hood, and optional twenty-inch wheels. We'd be remiss if we didn't note that the new Escalade is available with 22-inchers.

The Alfa Romeo 4C concept was one of the biggest stars of the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. Sexy, sporty, and allegedly destined for production, the show car excited us not only because its specifications promised incredible performance, but also because the car would be the first new Alfa Romeo sold in America under the then-nascent Fiat-Chrysler partnership. After waiting nearly two years, we finally have confirmation that the 4C is heading to the real world. Alfa Romeo will introduce the sports coupe at the Geneva Motor Show next month, and plans to start selling the car this year.

2007 Lexus LS460

2007 Lexus LS460
2007 Lexus LS460 - 2007 New Cars - Automobile Magazine
Will this finally be the Lexus that competes with top-tier German sedans? Judge for yourself with our new car coverage.

Seventeen years after Lexus introduced the first LS luxury sedan at the 1989 Detroit auto show, the company unveiled its fourth-generation flagship sedan, the LS460, in Motown. As successful as the LS400 and the LS430 have been, they have never quite measured up to the big, long-wheelbase offerings from Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, and Jaguar in terms of sheer size, street presence, and prestige, even if they often exceeded them in refinement, reliability, and quality. Now that Toyota is expanding the Lexus brand beyond North America to Japan, Europe, and other world markets, the automaker hopes to compete neck-to-neck with the S-class, the 7-series, the A8, and the XJ8 with the LS460L, which debuted in Detroit as the first-ever, long-wheelbase LS. Lexus also announced that the new LS will be equipped with the world's first eight-speed automatic transmission, a big poke in the eye to Mercedes, which introduced a seven-speed automatic only recently. "That's right," said Jim Press, president and COO of Toyota Motor Sales during the unveiling of the LS460. "Eight speeds. We're uppin' 'em one."

2007 Jaguar XKR Coupe and Convertible

2007 Jaguar XKR Coupe and Convertible
2007 Jaguar XKR Coupe and Convertible - New and Future Cars, Trucks, and SUVs - Automobile Magazine
The addition of 120 hp is the primary difference between the XKR and the normally aspirated XK, but it's by no means the only one. Consider also the stiffer suspension, a new rear suspension brace, and larger front brakes. A bespoke, aluminum-trimmed front bumper, body-color hood vents, unique nineteen- or twenty-inch wheels, and quad tailpipes distinguish the XKR's exterior.

The subtle whine of the supercharger and the healthy growl of the exhaust motivate you to keep the transmission one gear lower than necessary. The well-damped suspension perfectly modulated the optional twenty-inch wheels over rough sections of tarmac, and the light but communicative steering points you exactly where you want to go. This is a car that inspires you to stop, tap the paddle shifter down to first, and hit the gas for another intoxicating run through the gears, just to experience the blissful marriage of the engine and the fast-shifting manu-matic. Welcome to the new Jaguar XKR.

Lewis Hamilton move would not be a huge surprise

If Lewis Hamilton does move to Mercedes from McLaren for next season, as Eddie Jordan believes he will, it would be a massive shock but not a huge surprise.

There has appeared no urgency from either Hamilton or McLaren to sort out a new contract for 2013 and at the same time there have been signs of unease in the relationship.

The 27-year-old's management team have approached all the big teams this summer and they got short shrift from Red Bull and Ferrari.

Mercedes's reaction has been warmer, and negotiations are known to have taken place, but the issue is complicated by Michael Schumacher's situation.

Lewis Hamilton

Schumacher has not exactly been setting the world on fire this season, with the notable exception of qualifying fastest in Monaco, but at the same time Mercedes cannot be seen to be sacking him because of his status, particularly in Germany.

The German legend is of huge promotional value to Mercedes but the company is split on whether he should continue.

From a marketing point of view, he is a dream - and as he is considered untouchable in Germany any decision to move aside must appear to have come from him.

But those who see the F1 programme from a performance point of view would rather Schumacher stepped down and made way for someone younger and faster.

If they can replace him with someone of the highest calibre - someone such as Hamilton, for example - then that helps, too, as the decision is more easily understandable.

And it is clear after an increasingly uncompetitive season that the team could benefit from employing Hamilton, who is one of F1's 'big three' alongside Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel, neither of whom are available.

The attraction Mercedes might have to Hamilton is less clear, given their current struggles, but perhaps the continuing frustrations of his time at McLaren have convinced him it is time for a change.

McLaren struggled by their own high standards in 2009-11, during which time Hamilton did not have a car competitive enough to mount a full-on title challenge.

They came closest in 2010, but it was always a battle against the generally faster Red Bull and Ferrari.

And although McLaren started this season with the fastest car - and have it again after a brief mid-season dip in form - operational errors earlier in the season hit Hamilton's title bid.

Money may well also be an important factor. Hamilton made some cryptic comments in Belgium last weekend about his future move being a "business decision".

Equally, there have been signs of friction between him and McLaren.

In certain quarters of the team, they are uncomfortable about Hamilton's approach to his job and his mindset. And the disconnect was made public this weekend with his ill-advised behaviour on the social networking site Twitter, on which he posted a picture of confidential team telemetry.

Where does that all leave McLaren, Mercedes and Hamilton? Time will tell.

In its quest to build as many different vehicles as possible from one common starting point, BMW has launched yet another volley: the 3 Series Gran Turismo. The 3 GT follows the pattern of the 5 Series Gran Turismo that came before it, splitting the difference between a sedan, crossover, and wagon. The 3 Series GT fills the tiny niche for buyers who want a high-riding 3 Series with a smidge more cargo room.

And although Chrysler's famously ordinary mid-size Sebring sedan fails to make us wet ourselves with glee, the Avenger concept--which was reportedly been built on the 2007 Sebring's platform--at least exudes some excitement. Dodge claims that the Avenger "hints at the next-generation global D-segment vehicle from Dodge," but we're fairly sure it does more than "hint." Power comes from a turbocharged 2.0-liter diesel four; that engine will likely be offered outside North America shortly after the production car's launch.

Longer, lower, and more fuel efficient.

The Acura MDX you can buy today at dealers is not an old car, nor is it a bad one; thanks to its handsome styling and endearing driving dynamics, all the SUV would need to last another six or so years on sale would be a nice freshening. Acura seems to agree with this statement: the 2014 MDX Prototype on the stand at the Detroit auto show isn't a massive departure from the current model; rather, it's an elegant follow-up to today's successful crossover.

2007 Saturn Sky Redline

2007 Saturn Sky Redline
2007 Saturn Sky Redline - 2007 New Cars - Automobile Magazine
The Saturn Sky Redline adds some power to an already attractive package.

A 47 percent power bump and a 57 percent torque boost are just the nudges needed to rev the Saturn Sky to the Red Line. A 2.0-liter version of General Motors' Ecotec four-cylinder roused by a dual-scroll intercooled turbo, direct injection, and variable valve timing delivers a hunky 260 hp. Improved driveline mounting (similar to the Mazda MX-5's scheme), a sport suspension damped by Bilstein, ABS, stability control, and upgraded tires take the already capable chassis up a notch. But instead of tuning this Sky to run wild with BMWs and Porsches, Saturn focused on polishing its rough edges. The turbo engine is a torquer, not a spinner, so the Red Line delivers thrust immediately, without waiting for the tach needle to find a sweet spot. The new third gear in the manual box is a more useful ratio, and the optional five-speed automatic is smart enough to downshift during hard braking into a corner. The turbo engine not only speaks more softly than the normally aspirated four-cylinder, it also delivers better fuel mileage. While a couple of clouds still hang over the Sky--a storage-shy cockpit and a clunky convertible top--the arrival of the Red Line is convincing proof that polishing works.

2007 Audi RS4 - Car Review & Road Test - Automobile Magazine
Among the RS4's key ingredients: A normally aspirated, 8250-rpm, 420-hp V-8 that shares only water and steering pumps with the S4's V-8.

There's no sense in holding out. The truth is so important, it needs to see daylight right here and now: The 2006 RS4 is the purest driver's car from Audi in the past two decades. Although Audis have always been sporty machines, the company's reputation for harder-edged performance dates back to the 1982-86 Coupe Quattro. That car used the first iteration of Audi's Quattro all-wheel-drive system and housed a 160-hp turbo five-cylinder under its long hood. The flared-fender coupe was underpowered and expensive ($35,000) in U.S. trim, but it was nothing short of iconic. It was astonishingly easy to drive fast in the dry, and its wet-road grip bordered on the sublime. Between 1982 and 1984, Audi Quattros effectively dominated the World Rally Championship. They also single-handedly ended the two-wheel-drive rally-car era.

Vettel takes over at the top

As Sebastian Vettel put down his winner’s trophy after holding it up in celebration on the Korean Grand Prix podium, Fernando Alonso tapped him on the back and reached out to shake his hand. It was a symbolic reflection of the championship lead being handed from one to the other.

After three consecutive victories for Vettel and Red Bull, the last two of which have been utterly dominant, it does not look as though Alonso is going to be getting it back.

Alonso will push to the end, of course, and he made all the right noises after the race, talking about Ferrari “moving in the right direction” and only needing “a little step to compete with Red Bull”.

“Four beautiful races to come with good possibilities for us to fight for the championship,” he said, adding: “Now we need to score seven points more than Sebastian. That will be extremely tough but we believe we can do it.”

Indeed, a couple of hours after the race, Alonso was quoting samurai warrior-philosophy again on his Twitter account, just as he had in Japan a week before.

"I've never been able to win from start to finish,” he wrote. “I only learned not to be left behind in any situation."

Fighting against the seemingly inevitable is his only option. The facts are that the Ferrari has been slower than the Red Bull in terms of outright pace all year, and there is no reason to suspect anything different in the final four races of the season.

Vettel’s victory in Korea was utterly crushing in the manner of so many of his 11 wins in his dominant 2011 season. The Red Bull has moved on to another level since Singapore and Vettel, as he always does in that position, has gone with it.

Up and down the pit lane, people are questioning how Red Bull have done it, and a lot of attention has fallen on the team’s new ‘double DRS’ system.

This takes an idea introduced in different form by Mercedes at the start the season and, typically of Red Bull’s design genius Adrian Newey, applies it in a more elegant and effective way.

It means that when the DRS overtaking aid is activated – and its use is free in practice and qualifying – the car benefits from a greater drag reduction, and therefore more straight-line speed than its rivals.

Vettel has been at pains to emphasise that this does not help Red Bull in the race, when they can only use the DRS in a specified zone when overtaking other cars. But that’s not the whole story.

The greater drag reduction in qualifying means that the team can run the car with more downforce than they would otherwise be able to – because the ‘double DRS’ means they do not suffer the normal straight-line speed deficit of doing so.

That means the car’s overall lap time is quicker, whether in race or qualifying. So although the Red Bull drivers can’t use the ‘double DRS’ as a lap-time aid in the actual grands prix, they are still benefiting from having it on the car.

And they are not at risk on straights in the race because the extra overall pace, from the greater downforce, means they are far enough ahead of their rivals for them not to be able to challenge them, let alone overtake them. As long as they qualify at the front, anyway.

It’s not all down to the ‘double DRS’, though. McLaren technical director Paddy Lowe said in Korea: “They appear to have made a good step on their car. I doubt that is all down to that system. I doubt if a lot of it is down to that system, actually. You’ll probably find it’s just general development.”

BBC F1 technical analyst Gary Anderson will go into more details on this in his column on Monday. Whatever the reasons for it, though, Red Bull’s rediscovered dominant form means Alonso is in trouble.

While Red Bull have been adding great chunks of performance to their car, Ferrari have been fiddling around with rear-wing design, a relatively small factor in overall car performance.

They have admitted they are struggling with inconsistency between the results they are getting in testing new parts in their wind tunnel and their performance on the track, so it is hard to see how they will close the gap on a Red Bull team still working flat out on their own updates.

The Ferrari has proved adaptable and consistent, delivering strong performances at every race since a major upgrade after the first four grands prix of the year.

But the only time Alonso has had definitively the quickest car is when it has been raining. It is in the wet that he took one of his three wins, and both his poles.

But he cannot realistically expect it to rain in the next three races in Delhi, Abu Dhabi and Austin, Texas. And after that only Brazil remains. So Alonso is effectively hoping for Vettel to hit problems, as he more or less admitted himself on Sunday.

How he must be ruing the bad breaks of those first-corner retirements in Belgium and Japan – even if they did effectively only cancel out Vettel’s two alternator failures in Valencia and Monza.

If anyone had reason on Sunday to regret what might have been, though, it was Lewis Hamilton, who has driven fantastically well all season only to be let down by his McLaren team in one way or another.

Hamilton, his title hopes over, wasted no time in pointing out after the race in Korea that the broken anti-roll bar that dropped him from fourth to 10th was the second suspension failure in as many races, and a broken gearbox robbed him of victory at the previous race in Singapore.

Operational problems in the early races of the season also cost him a big chunk of points.

Hamilton wears his heart on his sleeve, and in one off-the-cuff remark to Finnish television after the race, he revealed a great deal about why he has decided to move to Mercedes next year.

“It’s a day to forget,” Hamilton said. “A year to forget as well. I’m looking forward to a fresh start next year.”

In other words, I’ve had enough of four years of not being good enough, for various reasons, and I might as well try my luck elsewhere.

There was another post-race comment from Hamilton, too, that said an awful lot. “I hope Fernando keeps pushing,” he said.

Hamilton did not reply when asked directly whether that meant he wanted Alonso to win the title. But you can be sure that remark is a reflection of Hamilton’s belief that he is better than Vettel, that only Alonso is his equal.

Whether that is a correct interpretation of the standing of the three best drivers in the world, it will take more than this season to tell.

In the meantime, if Alonso and Ferrari are not to be mistaken in their belief that they still have a chance, “keeping pushing” is exactly what they must do. Like never before.

The 2007 Porsche 911 Targa is coming soon.

The 911 rollout continues not just with the higher-performance variants but with the new Targa as well. As 911 fans know, the Targa concept has changed somewhat since the model first appeared in 1966. Where the early cars had a removable roof section over the front seats, more recent models have an all-glass roof and a power-operated sunshade with a front section that slides rearward. The 2007 Targa continues with that setup, and it also has a hatch-opening rear window that provides a second way to access the cargo hold behind the front seats. What's new this time is that the Targa will be offered exclusively with four-wheel drive and the wider, flared-fender body style. The Targa 4 gets the standard 911's 325-hp, 3.6-liter flat six, while the Targa 4S packs the larger, 3.8-liter engine and an additional 30 hp. As before, all 911 Targas have pointed rear quarter-windows, helping the cognoscenti pick the Targa out of the 911 crowd.

Volvo S80

Volvo is one of those automakers that rarely make a splash in the auto scene. Unless they come out with a concept - a feat in itself - they’re usually content with just sitting out of the spotlight and producing cars that are known for their fuel efficiency and safety.

That being said, we still have to give due attention to the automaker, especially when they decide to roll out a bevy of new models for nearly their entire product line.

One of these models is the new S80, the Swedish automaker’s luxury sedan. Previous versions didn’t really inspire a whole lot of interest from the market, but that doesn’t mean that the new S80 doesn’t come with some interesting new features about it that could make it a safe choice for a luxury model.

We certainly see some merits on the new S80. Sure, there are some things we don’t like about it too, but with a brand like Volvo, the case is always the customer taking what he can get.
